Get creative! Grab a shoe…

I love painting shoes…I especially love shoe-painting because they make great gifts for people! This was a gift I made for someone on valentines day, hence all of the hearts. I got the creative bug from my mom. Growing up without a lot of money you get a lot of hand-me-downs, and unfortunately for me I had an older brother. This meant a lot of cutting, sewing, and painting on clothes to make them more girly, and closer to my size.

My Custom Shoes

I remember my mom showing me how to sew a strip of beads to the bottom of a pair of shorts she made from an old pair of my brother’s jeans. She told me I was going to be the “coolest kid in school” because no one would have clothes like me. There was some truth to that, depending on your definition of cool. Needless to say, she went a little overboard, and pretty soon I had beaded shorts, pants, and ankle socks. (It was the beaded socks that made me lose points with the popular kids). Anyways, enough was enough. The rebel in me ripped the ornate beading right off, sparking my jewelry making years. I bought some elastic, slipped a couple of charms and recycled plastic beads onto them, and sold them for 3 dollars a piece on the playground. I was 11, and already thinking of how to put some money into the piggy bank so my neighbor Brenda and I could afford a tape recorder and a mic, for our future careers as singer/songwriters. Thankfully, that phase came to an end, However my career as a fashion designer is still up for debate….

Wow… I really admire you’re passion and creativity. I too had a lot of 2nd hand and 3rd hand clothes growing up but never attempted to revive them. I received my neighbor’s daughter’s black/pink stripped turtle-neck and just wore it because I didn’t have a choice. And of course being a boy in the 3rd and 4th grade wearing pink didn’t get me any popular points. But I guess its those moments in our lives that help define us and who we’re going to be!

Well, if you ever run out of options you can come join me in my shoe painting glory. I work on broadway doing crafts (including all those lovely shoes) for wordrobe. I think during the run of Shrek I painted more shoes then I have owned in my entire life!

I remember when I was in junior high (between 1987-1989)I had jeans I ripped myself, my grandmother was into arts/crafts, she had fabric paint even ones with glitter and the kind they called puff paint, I painted those jeans and wrote stuff on them, I even made a matching t-shirt. I took a pair of scissors and cut several holes on either side of the zipper and took a hot pink shoestring and threaded it over the zipper. I thought I looked so cool. And, yes, I took a pair of white canvas tennis shoes and painted those to match my outfit. My mom couldn’t afford to buy us new clothes, so I did what I could.

Ahh!!! no no no Converse shoes are not ment for designs!!! original black or red high tops or low cuts. not to be haten’ but i don’t like them. but just my opinion i just like the fact that origanality was put into them.

    August 6, 2010 | 3:27 pm

OMG! No WAY! I used to make earings when I was younger, and I used to sell them at school for $2.

It’s funny, sometimes I thing that celebrities are so different from “us normal folk”, but in reality there are many similarities.

I’m also stunned that you had a friend named Brenda. I’m 18, and it’s a very common name for my friends parents lol. But I’ve never heard of another Brenda close to my age.

What a great idea! My kids would love this, especially my girls. I often see plain white shoes on sale but never get them because they’re a little boring. I’m going to share this idea with all my mom pals. Thanks for posting!

Haha I did that as a kid too! I wonder if its just a normal phase? My best friend & I sold bracelets we made out of those tough plastic strings. We wanted to save up for a Spice Girl pack of stickers & various pins. I wish I was a fashionista like you though, fortunately I’m the oldest so everyone else got hand-me-downs but were never so creative.

    August 2, 2010 | 1:06 am

i get hand me downs from my cousins, because i’m an only child. my least fav cousin gave me her old jeans and i went to an art place with them and one of my friends started painting them, so i joined in! the second time i went, i added more decoration! now they r my fav pair of jeans!

Guys i don’t think this is Nikki Reed real blog. indeed these posts are automatically approved and I’m sure this would be impossible for a person such an actor who has to take very well attention to his/her image by controlling what can be written about her.

i think you are just making happy some fan of Nikki

    cheers

His story reminds me exactly my childhood, living in a world where appearance is everything you wear or what you have, my mother is a warrior who will fight ’til today. His life history becomes a reference for me I hope to become half the woman you are someday.

Those are awesome! I just glanced at the picture first before I started reading and I thought they were a pair you bought. :) I really like this idea and I think I may have to try it sometime. Especially with some pants I have that I’d rather have for capris. I always have trouble sometimes finding jeans or capris/shorts that work for me so I’m glad you gave me an idea!

Maybe sometime you could write a little tutorial or give ideas on how to make a pair of shorts out of recycled jeans? :)
