They keep it simple

I was traveling last year and came across these paintings/collages made by local kids that were hanging outside to dry.  When I was a kid I drew animals, mostly dogs, but according to my mother I loved to draw brides.  I think kids draw what they feel, more than what they see. I certainly didn’t see a lot of weddings growing up, but my parents did divorce when I was 2. Maybe that somehow made me more obsessed with white dresses and bouquets, or maybe I was just a normal little girl who glamorized the thought of them.

I love the picture with all of the smiling faces. I felt drawn to it, maybe because I couldn’t help but envision the child who drew it. I looked around and tried to guess which one it was. I would have asked but none of the kid’s spoke English. At first thought I assumed it would be the kid laughing the loudest, or smiling the biggest, but then I thought of all the things I drew when I was young that were far from obvious, and it made me look a little closer…

these pictures are so beautiful :)
children’s artwork is amazing; it makes you understand their personality.
my 4 year old sister is autistic and shes never looked anyone in the eye. she doesn’t speak. she doesn’t show emotions. she hardly moves.
i was sat here on the laptop reading your posts and she came over to me. she stood their, turned to the screen and smiled. She saw your name and pictures.
this was the first time my sister ever showed emotion…
i know part of what she feels now. your her hero.
    you also gave me hope!
i love you Nikki! your beautiful and soo talented :) keep up your amazing work :) )

    Dear, Nikki
As soon as I entered your blog I liked it very much precisely because it created a light hand is not a famous actress, ordinary girl with a good heart.
All your ideas are unique. They are filled with joy and gladness instead of grief and sadness in your smile. Thank you for what you have.

Its awesome that they actually hung the pictures outside to dry. In a lot of cases no one cares about something a child draws its viewed as something trivial. They have taken the time to show these kids they are important too along with what they dream and or feel. It’s cool to see how other cultures respond to things like this.

Its usually the ones who are standing alone. It is the ones wanting it the most that will bring it to life on paper.

Also I was just curious as to why you say in all your interview that teens and young adult should not pursue acting? Would you still say it if they went to College and received a higher education first?

I never realized that until you wrote that. Completely opened my eyes. When I was going through with depression in 7th grade I would draw things of death because that’s how I felt inside, completely dead. The best calendar I have ever seen was one where children drew pictures portraying their home countries. What their home countries meant to them, in their minds, since they now are USA citizens. It was amazing and these little ones show so much love and happiness in their paintings – looking at the bright side even when life has been difficult for them. I love children’s art….thanks for sharing this!

The other day I was helping my parents clean out our attic and I found a box of my 2nd grade drawings and stories and such. I found that most of my work was about horrible things such as tornadoes killing animals and uprooting houses. I didn’t even remember doing any of that, and things like that never happened to my in my childhood. I asked my father if I was a dark child and he thought nothing of it. It was strange to find that kind of dark artwork from my past since my childhood was pretty normal and happy.

@NikNak: nice to meet you! Your comment makes me think a lot! I didn’t notice that I have a very happy family until I read about Nikki and you! Perhaps people in my country (I mean VietNam) don’t take divorce and re-marry as a good thing, so in my 18 years of life, I haven’t ever witnessed anyone get divorce (except in the movies)! I feel really really sorry for those who faced this situation!! But life is more than that, I believe so!^o^

Oh my, your childhood story is very similar to mine. When I was little, I used to always draw a little house with three windows,a door, a quaint little pathway leading up to it, flower bushes on the side, a big tree next to it and a great round sound always shining down on it. In my mind, it was the perfect home. However, my home in reality was anything but perfect. My parents separated when I was 3 and got their marrage annuled when I was 10. I lived with my grandmother along my three siblings. It was a miserable home, everyone always fought with each other. I guess what I was drawing was what my unconscious wanted at the time.

That really made think deeper about what kids draw. I always drew flowers and dresses (including wedding dresses, my parents got divorced when I was 2 also, thats really weird) and diamond rings. I really can’t draw though.

Children draw (no pun intended) inspiration from many things. They can be simple, like just what they’ve seen – but as Jason said, thy also draw a lot of wishes and desires as well. Nice post. Colourful too! :D

  75. Kristi
    July 29, 2010 | 8:46 pm

  76. Rachel

“I think kids draw what they feel” that’s exactly! I used to draw a lot of paintings which included a cottage, a chicken, a field and the sun though I had not seen cottage and field before! But then I recognized my paintings were absolutely terrible, therefore, to protect everyone’s eyes, I decided to quit drawing :) )
