The best part about The Shreve is the green goop…

I’m currently working in Shreveport. Anyone who has ever been to “The Shreve,” as I like to call it, will tell you there isn’t much to do, unless you are into gambling or fried food. Personally neither of those really do it for me. It’s too hot to be outside, and circulated air gives me the creeps, so I’ve been exploring the local mall and health food store. Notice the words “mall”, and “store”.

Nikki Reed - Shreveport 1

Anyways, the other day I bumped into a woman who took it upon herself to tell me about the number of people who go missing in Shreveport. Her reasoning for why it was so easy to lose people was, the “gators”. According to her it’s quite easy to dump bodies in swamps around here because they are almost immediately devoured.  She proceeded to tell me that her son-in-law walked out the door one day and never returned. I decided to take a 30 minute drive today to see these swamps…

Nikki Reed - Shreveport 2

It’s breathtaking, and not just because being outside with this humidity makes it so difficult to breath. I have never seen anything like it. I’m either incredibly naive, or very appreciative of nature… but

Nikki Reed - Shreveport 3

I could spend hours looking at them.

Really? We usually call Shreveport ‘way up Nort’. Man, I didn’t realize there was swamp up there. If Louisiana were an actual boot, the place I’m from would be the back of the arch. Vermilion Parish, baby. Home of the Giant Omelette Festival. And also, Sammy Kershaw. And the filming location of the 80′s version of “The Blob”. All I ever seem to see from I49 are hills and red dirt.

She was probably just trying to scare, ya. Gators are dangerous, but you really only have to worry if you go causin’ a ruckus near their nest.

Isn’t it odd, how hard it is to see a banana spider’s web, considering how big they get. That’s the part that always creeps me out, when you walk right into one.

“She’s a myth that I have to believe in. All I need to make it real, is one more reason….But I won’t let this build up inside of me” -Vermilion Part 2 by Slipknot

Nikki – you are so right about not having much to do in Shreveport. And if you are not from Louisiana, the humidity can be shocking at first.

One thing that native Louisianians know is that Northern Louisiana and Southern Louisiana might as well be two different states. You will get a sense of this when you are in Baton Rouge. The people, the food, the music & culture are all very different in the southern part of the state.

If you are looking for an eclectic mix of nightlife, music, shopping, creole history or the arts – head to New Orleans (about 1 hour east of BR)

For real cajun music, food and culture (can’t be found in New Orleans or Shreveport) – don’t miss Lafayette, Lake Charles, Eunice and/or Mamou. Most people who visit never want to leave! (just follow I-10 -Lafayette is approx 1hr west of BR)

All along the I-10 corridor are wonderful cities and towns to visit. There are plenty of bayous & swamps to see too. Louisiana is a beautiful, unique state. You will not find better food or friendlier people anywhere in the world. I hope that you get to visit more of it in the fall.

We are happy to welcome y’all to our state. As we say down here “Laissez Le Bon Temps Roulet” (let the good times roll)!!

If you like the swamps in Shreveport, then when you are filming in Baton Rouge this fall make sure to visit the Atchafalaya basin. It is even more breathtaking. As someone who passes there regularly, I still can’t help but stare out the window when I’m passing.

Its funny, becuase I used to live in the northwest, and being down in the south with all the swamps is so amazing. I love the nature here, although its not as secluded as the North.

I love swamps. Part of my family lives in Florida, so when I would visit we always went to the Everglades. I’d love to see the swamps in Louisiana now. Your pictures are gorgeous.

    Nikki,

As a southern forester & botanist I DO know exactly what you felt photographing those swamps. I also think it takes a wise eye and and old soul for those who do not work in these environments everyday to see that beauty sometimes.

To read your words on your experiences truly impressed me. It’s wonderful to see Nikki Reed the person; and it helps to remind me that we are all at least 2 different people – our professional selves and our personal selves – and that although those 2 selves can weave together, we should always remember that people aren’t just what we show the world in one venue or another.

If you look closer, you’ll find that the goop is actually millions of tiny floating plants called duckweed. You would probably enjoy the Spirit of the Red River paddleboat tour. Also, be sure to visit Earthereal restaurant on Line for tasty vegetarian lunches.

I live here, and lots of history. The nature is comparednto none…as is the humidity but you learn to live with it. Luckily not a permanent residence…the river is nice to sit along and the Fairfield historic section of huge houses are nice…the Louisiana boardwalk is a must if u like shopping and would recommend the Peanut Butter Perfection at Coldstone Creamery is to die for…but a workout is recommended afterwards! LOL

These are great pictures! I’m glad to see that you are enjoying our state! I have lived in Lafayette, LA my entire life and I definitely understand about the humidity. I definitely love the food, but not everything that is great here is fried! You should get a Louisiana native to cook you something truly great…it will definitely not be something you find in the health food store though. :)

Cool photos. Ok… WTH!!! I see spider… I am terrified of spiders. (Ahhh!) I was thinking about traveling down to Mississippi and Louisiana I visit some family and the great food down there. I’m from Chicago born and raise. I would mind hanging out in the south, thing seen so relaxing compared to the fast lane of the city…

  22. Nicole (Cole)
    July 30, 2010 | 12:24 pm

    Nikki,
My Mother is from Louisiana – very near Shreveport. Oddly enough, my sister and I were both born and raised in Central, IL but we have always returned to LA to visit, as my Mom’s entire side of the family resides there. Most of them live in the same area, on the same road (with the bayou in their backyards) and if you travel that blacktop road past their homes, it eventually runs right into the swamp. Literally.
You’re spot on about the humidity (it’s the only thing I truly hate about LA) and the fascinating and breathtaking swamp. It’s dangerous and mysterious and beautiful. Looking at your photos makes me ache to visit…. I miss the smell in the air (when you finally adjust to the humidity and find a way to breathe), the varying colors of green, the beautiful willow trees and the ever-intriguing swamps.
I know there isn’t much to do there and that must be difficult for anyone who isn’t from there – but I really appreciate the fact that you are able to recognize the unique beauty that is Louisiana.
    Much luck to you!

    Nicole

Awww the heat is a bit much, huh? Yea, I live in New Orleans and the weather isn’t always enjoyable! Shreveport isn’t really known for much though! But you wouldn’t have to travel that far to see bigger and better towns I’m sure! Baton Rouge, Lafayette, or New Orleans would provide better entertainment for ya! If you need a tour guide for Nola, let me know! And don’t worry the weather will probably start to cool down once your filming Breaking Dawn! Have a good time in Louisiana because it really can be a very magical place!

Louisiana does have some beautiful places, the nature is great and yes we do have alot of “critters” lol. I’m from southeast Louisiana so I can tell you, Shreveport is pretty dull. Get down to New Orleans and eat some real food – that isn’t fried!!! The humidity is MUCH worse but after a few hurricanes (the drink), you’ll survive!

I’m not sure that the BEST part about Shreveport is the green goop, but nature can be very relaxing. Louisiana’s known as the “Sportsman’s Paradise” because of the opportunity for fishing, hunting, or any other outdoorsy adventure. It’s kind of like life — you have to look for what you want in order to find it. Every now and then something will fall into your lap that you weren’t expecting, but if you are looking for adventure or entertainment, you have to open your mind and your heart and go find it.

Anywhere you go in this town, somebody has a story to tell. You will get the most creative directions in the South. Go to a restaurant and ask for the chef or owner — ask them for something creative and different…something not fried. Make some local friends while you are in town because that’s how you get the invitations to the good home-cooked food. Go to the racetrack. It may not sound like much, but when you go see the horses in the paddock and then stand at the rail and watch them come thundering to the finish, your heart can’t help but beat fast. And, if you still want more nature, hit the American Rose Center in Greenwood, Hodges Gardens about an hour out of town, The Alligator/Swamp Tour heading west towards Texas or any of the local lakes or State Parks.

We’ve got the best of both worlds: small town rural living if you want it or Dallas is a 3 hour drive away if you want some bright lights big city.

    Enjoy your time here!

You should consider trying to come back to visit Louisiana during festival season. While I’m not sure about festivals in/around Shreveport, I’m sure that there are some close by. Festival season is the best time of year. Most tourists come for Mardi Gras, but there is so much more to experience here than just that. It’s what we’re best known for, but I think venues such as the Strawberry Festival in Ponchatoula and the Crawfish Festival in Breaux Bridge are so much more worthwhile and interesting. Maybe that’s because I’m a Louisiana native and you can only experience so much at Mardi Gras, but, it’s still worth a shot.

Glad you’re enjoying the swamps. They can be hauntingly beautiful. I live in Natchitoches (about a 45 minute drive from Shreveport). I agree with what was said earlier that Natchitoches is a beautiful town. The river bank here is worth the drive. And if you’re interested in alligators, the Alligator Park is here in Natchitoches. Sorry it sounds like you hate being in Shreveport. But let me say I have lived here all my life and know that here the weather might now be the greatest but here we are the kind of people that you can always count on. We are very proud of our city. And yes there are more than one mall and many stores.Maybe you just needed someone who knows the town to show you what we have to offer. It’s called down home family style. So again sorry you hate being here in our place we call home.

What movie are you shooting in Shreveport? My stepdaughter is heading back there in about a week to spend time with her mom and very large family. She is 17, and really an awesome young woman as is her family. If you have some time to spare and want to see the “real” Shreveport (and for that matter, New Orleans as well…very large LA family) write me back and I will get you in touch with her.

    Dear Nikki,
I gave birth to my oldest at LSU hospital in Shreveport. Sad to say the relationship I was in didn’t give me the pleasure of enjoying the swampland. I lived 60 miles southwest and there are gators and those stories that woman shared with you…back in the 70′s they were fact. Also had 2nd child in Pleasant Hill, LA.
I haven’t been back there since 1982. Be safe. Oh I love you as Rosalie.

I lived in Louisiana, Hammond / Ponchatoula area… Being from Vancouver BC I was quite shocked to get off the iarplane in my parka in November and emerge at the New Orleans airport to humidity and summer weather.

Once in October I took a swamp tour – it was…. interesting… the Bayou is so exotic to a Pacific North Westerner like myself – I really enjoyed my time there but was glad to move back home to my mountains, ocean and even my rain!

Enjoy your stay – try to take a swamp tour – they are pretty awesome for photography :)

Northern Louisiana is not known for it’s food. You’ve got to head south for that. There you will find “Cajuns,” who KNOW how to cook the food from that green goop. The Quarter is as bad as it ever was but the music is divine. During the day, there are antique shops there worth visiting and a few places to dine that are excellent. Be sure and visit Cafe du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait. Heavenly.

For really good food, come to Houston. We simply have it all. What ever you do, have a wonderful time doing it and come back often.

Thank you for your wonderful work. I’ve enjoyed all three now. Take care,

Girl you’ve been in Cali too long!! I have lived in the south all my life (Savannah,GA.) The south is known for all kinds of “creepy crawlers” and “nature” as you call it, lol! The heat and humidity are killer, but that’s why people call us southerners slow!! We can’t move too fast when it is 102 outside with a heat index of 119(that’s what it was today in Savannah!! Sorry Shreveport isn’t hopping or has anything to do. If you are ever around Georgia, be sure to stop in Savannah!! I promise you will have a great time!! We have the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the U.S.!!Something EVERYONE has to experience at least once in their lifetime!! What are you working on in Shreveport anyway? Love your movies and look forward to your next body of work!! Take care!!

Ok…I have to laugh at this, simply because, I live in Shreveport. Lol to say that there is nothing to do, is an understatement. It is, however, the clubbers, and gamblers dream. As for shopping, I would assume the reference is being made towarrds mall St. Vincent, since that is usually the parking lot movie crews use. Absolutely horrible lol. However, the Louisiana Boardwalk is amazing out doors shopping, but because of the heat, it is best enjoyed durring the fall and spring, although, you can get a breeze durring summer, since it is located alongside the Red River.
Eating out can be a challenge, because, yes, this is Louisiana and Louisianians fry everything lol but if you enjoy japanese, itallian, seafood or bar-b-q, its not far from your reach either.
Ok now that I have rambled on, I will leave this with note that, people do not dissapear all the time from gators, lol and its crazy that some one would say that, but, then again, some people are strange lol
I saw this on facebook and HAD to read on. Take care!

Who took the pictures? I have lived in Louisiana all my life and have always wanted to take pictures of the swamps. These pictures are awesome! They make me appreciate the beauty of where I come from. I hope you are enjoying Shreveport! I have family that live there and they love it.

The pictures are so pretty!! You took pictures of the spider!! To me that’s brave!! I’m arachnophobic and I like freak out when I see or think there’s a spider in the room.
You’re a great actress and now I learned that you take interest in photography and art. That’s awesome.

Thanks for sharing with us. I’m so happy to hear that you are beginning to enjoy your stay in the south. Being from the south it is my favorite place in the US. I love big cities as well, like NYC. But there is something so special about the south. Although I’m from Alabama I love Louisiana. There is something so different about it. Something I don’t have to the words the express. It’s just a feeling I get when I’m there. I hope you enjoy your stay and find new ways to entertain yourself. I know your very busy with work, but I also know you have a lot of down time waiting for things to be set up for the next shot or whatever. I know you’ll be enjoying an extended stay with your next movie also filming in Louisiana. Maybe this year you won’t freeze your butts off!

You should come further south and tour the Atchafalaya Basin. It’s nice and peaceful just like those pics above. Yes the humidty is a kicker, but Baton Rouge has 2 malls and a whole lot more stores. You should get a tour guide and also visit New Orleans! i LOVE the state I live in and wouldn’t trade it for any other, not even during a hurricane.

I never found much to do in Shreveport except gamble and shop (both of which take too much of my money) so I stay away from there :) Come up the road about an hour to Texarkana/Fouke area and you can learn all about the Boggy Creek Monster ;)

I love that you’ve created your own website. I am not usually one to leave comments or things for celebrities…mostly because I doubt I’ll ever meet anyone famous! But, when I saw the spiders with the zig-zag webs, I had to say something! I unknowingly knocked on a door where there was one of those right above me. When my friend pointed it out I moved faster than I ever have in my life to get off that porch! I’ve had nightmares on occasion since then. I was traumatized!! :) Anyway, thanks for letting yourself be so accessible to your fans in this way. It really is so fun to see a little bit of the things that you love.

Well, Darlin, it is very humid here and it was awfully humid this weekend. I live in Leesville. It is about 2-3 hours south of Sheveport. I wish I could tell you where to go or what to do there, but I have no idea. I have only been there a couple of times. It looks like you had some fun though looking at the swamps and what-not. They are very beautiful pictures. I do hope that you have a good time here. I’m not originally from here, but I do love Louisiana. Drop me a line sometime. LOL phoenixdolphin3@yahoo.com

She proceeded to tell me That her son-in-law Walked Out the door one day and never returned. ” ok, it scared me a little, especially at the end HAHA. but anyway, it’s all very very beautiful *-* ah, kisses from a Brazilian fan, take care baby. : *

Ok, I have some of these “up close and personal” photos with spiders! Oh my goodness! One was just last week when my famly went to Canyon, Texas to see the play “Texas”..my kiddos, face to face with Tarantula’s! And then some when we went camping at the lake. Really interesting spiders I must say. I love the little green frog! The pictures are incredible. I will say that you have courage getting that close to capture some of God’s amazing wildlife! Keep em’ coming!!!!! WOW!!!

Great photos, Nikki. Thanks for sharing. Where is this in proximity to Shreveport? I live here but have never seen this particular spot.

If you like healthy food, be sure to check out Earthereal on Line Ave. They’ve been there over 30 years and the food is simple and delicious. Also definitely get a Humphrey Yogart from Counter Culture on Kings Hwy. They’ve also been in business here over 30 years and the Humphrey is a not-to-miss, guilt-free Shreveport tradition! :-)

Great pictures. I’m working on a painting about a swamp right now. Welcome to our town! There’s more to Shreveport than fried foods and casinos. The local mainstream media doesn’t do a very good job of covering the good stuff. I think they get paid extra to report traffic accidents. Shreveport.blogspot.com is a great place to find out what all the cool kids are doing.

All of that is so awesome! The creepy swamp. The creepy stories…And that spider …just OMG. ewwwwwwww *shudders* Conversely tho – I’d love to be there and explore/take photos b/c despite the creep factor and ginormous spiders, it looks like a great place to be.
